0) Weekend Special Edition and Fundraiser Update …

Hey, everyone,

I’ve put together a “weekend special edition” of five news stories, five commentaries, and five audio/video links for you. Enjoy (we’ll start getting up content for the regular Monday editions tomorrow morning, of course).

Yes, it’s year-end fundraiser time again. Thanks to FD, JR, JF, TI and DFD for their contributions in the last 24 hours, totaling $48 and bringing our total to $829.50!

Our goal for this fundraiser — which ends when we make that goal or on December 31, whichever comes first — is $5,000.

How about a “mini-goal” of reaching the $1,000 point by Monday, though? We’re only $170.50 away. You can help get us there with a one-time or recurring donation at:

http://rationalreview.com/support-rrnd

And now I shall preach it a bit:

We’ve been bringing the freedom movement’s daily newspaper to you each non-holiday weekday since December 23, 2002, and were among a bunch of people bringing it to you before that going all the way back to 1991. We are the Internet’s oldest daily email news and commentary roundup for libertarians.

Our revenue model is simple: If YOU like it, return whatever YOU think it’s worth as financial support.

Based on our best estimates of a readership of at least 5,000 across all formats (two email editions, a web edition, and social media feeds via Facebook, Twitter, Steemit, Minds, MeWe, Liberty.me and Liberdon), if each reader coughed up a buck a month (and we DO offer that option!), we would seldom if ever have to rattle our tin cup at everyone. And believe me, we don’t LIKE to do so any more than necessary.

Until we get somewhere in that range, it’s pretty much a matter of “the beatings will continue until morale improves,” so to speak. We try to keep it light nine months out of the year, though, and only lay it on thick in October, November, and December.

Operators aren’t standing by, but that support link is always active at:

http://rationalreview.com/support-rrnd

Have a great weekend!

Yours in liberty,
Tom Knapp

1) Russia: Regime will help Iranians trade oil after US illegally reimposes sanctions
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatar state media]

“Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak has said Moscow will support Iran to counter US oil sanctions. Washington on Friday restored sanctions on Tehran, which had previously been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal. The measures are due to come into effect on Monday. … Covering Iran’s shipping, financial and energy sectors, the sanctions are the second set to be re-imposed by the Trump administration since it unilaterally withdrew [sic] from the nuclear deal in May.” [editor’s note: The Trump regime did not “withdraw from” the deal, it’s just violating the deal. The deal is codified as a UN Security Council resolution; the only way to “withdraw from” it is to “withdraw from” the UN itself – TLK] (11/03/18)

2) TSA gives green light to test new technology that can illegally search passengers from 25 feet away
Source: Los Angeles Times

“The Transportation Security Administration has given the go-ahead to test technology that is designed to [illegally search] multiple airport passengers at the same time from a distance of up to 25 feet away. … The [illegal search] device, which is about the size of an old-fashioned PC computer tower and weighs about 50 pounds, reads the outline of people to reveal firearms and explosives hidden under their clothes. …. Thruvision boasts that its technology can [illegally search] up to 2,000 people an hour and detect a concealed device at a distance of up to 25 feet.” (11/02/18)

3) SC: Man charged after trying to kick in woman’s door, getting shot
Source: Fox Carolina

“The homeowner, Ashley Jones, said she heard someone banging on her door. She looked out the window and didn’t see anyone, so she asked who was there. No one answered her, but she heard people speaking in front of the house. Next, Jones said she called 911 and grabbed her gun. As she walked downstairs with the gun, she said she saw a strange man in a red shirt knocking on her window by the front door. ‘I yelled, ‘I have a gun, I will shoot you, get away from my house,” Jones said. She said the man and a second person then went to the back of the house and tried to enter through the back door. Then, they went to the garage before coming back to the front door. That’s when Jones said the man kicked in the front door, and she pulled the trigger. She said the bullet hit the man, and he ran off. … the sheriff’s office named Cecil Charles Parnell, 42, as the male suspect in the case. Deputies said Parnell was charged with burglary first degree and booked in the Anderson County Detention Center.” (11/02/18)

4) GA: Federal appeals court decline’s Kemp’s plea to let him continue rigging election
Source: Atlanta Journal-Constitution

“The U.S. Court of Appeals has declined to stop an injunction that prevents Georgia elections officials from rejecting absentee ballots over signature discrepancies. U.S. District Court Judge Leigh Martin May issued the injunction last week as part of two separate lawsuits filed against defendants that include Secretary of State Brian Kemp. May declined on Wednesday Kemp’s request to pause the injunction while he appealed the decision. The Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals made the same decision Friday, issuing an order rejecting a similar request. That means May’s original order — which requires elections officials across Georgia to provide absentee voters more opportunities to rectify signature-related ballot issues — remains in effect.” (11/02/18)

5) Afghanistan: US occupier killed
Source: CNN

“One US service member was killed and another was wounded Saturday in the Afghan capital of Kabul in what the US-backed coalition called an apparent insider attack. Reports indicated the attacker was a member of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces and that the attacker was immediately killed by other Afghan forces, the NATO-led Resolute Support coalition said. The service members were evacuated to Bagram Airfield. The wounded service member is undergoing medical treatment and is in stable condition, authorities said. Neither service member has been identified, and no further details have been released.” (11/03/18)

6) Changing the rules
Source: The Honest Courtesan
by Maggie McNeill

“As veteran journalist A.J. Liebling once observed, ‘Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one.’ So when media conglomerates started buying up all the presses in the 1980s, censorious politicians were probably very happy …. No wonder they were so disappointed when the internet derailed that concentration process by making literally anybody with time and a high-school level of technical savvy into a publisher. By 1996 perceptive control freaks were already trying to strangle the infant internet in its cradle via the Communications Decency Act, only to be thwarted …. Naturally, the Puritans never abandoned their sick dream of censoring the internet, and in just a few years they had created ‘sex trafficking’ hysteria …. less than 20 years later the busybodies and thought-controllers had what they wanted: a means of bringing the most powerful tool for the dissemination of information ever created completely under government control.” (11/02/18)

7) Move Trump’s wall to DC
Source: Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G Hornberger

“A man who lives in Washington, D.C., was recently taken into custody at his home. The charge? He crossed the border that separates D.C. from Virginia and allegedly raped a woman who lives in Virginia. It’s not just rapists though. There are also robbers living in D.C. who periodically enter our state. They’re called IRS agents. These people come into our state regularly and steal millions of dollars from the hard-working people of Virginia. Why should we Virginians have to put up with this? Why should Washington, D.C., be permitted to send its rapists and robbers into our state? I’ve got an idea! Let’s build Trump’s Wall on the D.C.-Virginia border. That will keep us Virginians safe from the rapists and robbers who live in D.C. and who insist on coming into our state and committing their crimes. What about all the rest of the people in Washington — that is, the innocent ones, the ones who don’t commit crimes and who wish to enter our state? Tough luck.” (11/02/18)

8) What happens if Trump wins his bet on racial demagoguery?
Source: The Atlantic
by Conor Friedersdorf

“If the GOP succeeds next week at the ballot box, politicians all over the country will conclude that they can advance their careers by vilifying minority groups, frightening voters predisposed to xenophobia, and dividing Americans. No incentive structure is more dangerous to a multiethnic nation. Politicians in other nations marshaling similar tactics have sparked sectarian violence, campaigns of ethnic cleansing, and civil war. Trump happens to preside over a country where such extreme outcomes are unlikely. But that does not change the character of his tactics or the moral obligation to stand against them. I do not much like the Democratic Party. But I desperately want Republicans to conclude that the GOP harms rather than helps its prospects when it vilifies minorities, stokes the authoritarian impulses of its most frightened voters, and willfully divides Americans. Decisively defeating GOP candidates in the midterms is the surest way to send that message — while a Republican victory will encourage future campaign ads that even more closely resemble the work of D. W. Griffith.” (11/02/18)

9) Students for a freer future
Source: Reason
by Robby Soave

“Campus activism in the Trump era is a battle between two extremes: an uncompromising, take-no-prisoners leftism at odds with the principles of intellectual diversity and free speech, and an obnoxious, trolling conservatism that seems perfectly happy to self-destruct as long as it annoys a few progressives on its way out. Yet even as campus political culture has deteriorated, some surprising bright spots have emerged. Among those is the rise of a professionalized global student libertarian movement.” (for publication 12/18)

10) This too shall pass: “Birthright citizenship” kerfuffle is mostly a Get Out the Vote tactic
Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

“Trump used birthright citizenship as a rallying complaint on the campaign trail in 2016. He’s done nothing about it in the nearly two years since. Now he’s weaponizing it again, along with fear-mongering about a migrant caravan wending its way through Mexico toward the US, in a last-minute effort drive an extra (and possibly decisive in places) fraction of a percent of Republican-leaning voters to the polls for the 2018 midterms. After which he will almost certainly go back to doing nothing about it for another two years, until he trots it out a third time when seeking re-election in 2020.” (11/02/18)

“Lysander Spooner, the great 19th-century individualist anarchist, evidently wrote on banking and currency competition, but those works had been lost until now. Phil Magness, through some clever detective work, tracked them down and they’re now available, published via the American Institute for Economic Research! (They also shed light on whether Spooner sympathized with socialism or left-libertarianism.)” [various formats] (11/02/18)
