0) Happy Birthday to Us!

Dear readers,

A few hours from now here on the east coast of the US, the clock will tick over to December 23rd — our 16th anniversary as Rational Review News Digest (Freedom News Daily and Libernet were our previous incarnations, going back to 1991). Here’s a short special birthday edition (5 news stories, 5 commentaries, 5 audio/video links) to celebrate. Thanks for sticking with us into year 17!

We’ll publish a “hopefully regular size” edition (assuming there’s plenty of content) on Monday (Christmas Eve) and take Christmas day off. Because many of our content sources either shut down or slow down for the week between Christmas and the New Year, we’ll probably run short editions during that period.

Thanks to long-time supporter DM,whose $200 contribution (in cryptocurrency!) yesterday brings our year-end fundraiser total to $2,406.50!

Our goal for the year-end fundraiser is a modest $5,000 over the course of three months. With basically a week to go, we’re still less than halfway there. If you’ve never returned value for value to the freedom movement’s daily newspaper (based on what you personally find it “worth”), I hope you’ll consider doing so in the next few days to get us over the finish line. You can do that at:

Have a great weekend!

Yours in liberty,
Tom Knapp

1) Fake US government shutdown to drag on for days after Senate adjourns without deal
Source: The Hill

“The partial shutdown will drag into next week after the Senate adjourned on Saturday without taking action to end the funding lapse and reopen the federal government. The chamber will next meet for a pro forma session on Monday morning, then will reconvene after Christmas on Thursday, Dec. 27, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced. The pro forma is constitutionally mandated and the Senate does not generally conduct legislative business during the sessions, which last a few seconds. That will put the focus on getting a deal before lawmakers return on Thursday. … Lawmakers had gathered at the Capitol around noon on Saturday with modest hope of finding a way forward to end the shutdown, which began at 12:01 a.m. Saturday and is affecting about 25 percent of the federal government. But both sides quickly began blaming the other for the shutdown — the third in the past year — raising questions about how quickly lawmakers could reach a deal to end the funding lapse.” (12/22/18)

2) FDA casts shadow on hemp win, calling CBD products illegal
Source: Associated Press

“The hemp industry still has work ahead to win legal status for hemp-derived cannabidiol, or CBD oil, as an ingredient in food or dietary supplements despite the big farm bill President Donald Trump signed this week designating hemp as an agricultural crop. CBD oils have become increasingly popular in lotions, tinctures and foods, but their legal status has been murky and the Food and Drug Administration has sent warning letters to some companies making health claims for CBD. In a statement following Thursday’s bill signing in Washington, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb restated his agency’s stance that CBD is a drug ingredient and therefore illegal to add to food or health products without approval from his agency.” (12/22/18)

3) Christmas on Mars? Spacecraft captures 50-mile-wide icy crater on the Red Planet
Source: Fox News

“A winter wonderland sits amid a sandy Martian surface — at least, that’s the story new images released by the European Space Agency (ESA) from the Red Planet seem to tell. The stunning photos, which reveal a 50-mile-wide crater filled with ice, were shared by the ESA’s Mars Express spacecraft on Thursday. The Korolev crater is located on the northern lowlands of Mars, and it’s consistently covered in a blanket of ice about a mile thick, the ESA said in a recent news release. The breathtaking image was a creation made up of five images taken by the Mars Express High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) aboard the unmanned Mars Express spacecraft.” (12/21/18)

4) SCOTUS turns down Trump regime’s request to restart asylum ban
Source: USA Today

“The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a request from the Trump administration to restart an asylum ban that would have prevented migrants who enter the country illegally [sic] from applying for asylum. U.S. District Judge Jon Tigar placed a temporary hold on the Trump administration’s new rules to cut off asylum for migrants who enter the country illegally [sic] on Nov. 19. The Justice Department took the unusual step of jumping straight to the Supreme Court to reinstate the ban, but the justice[s] turned down that request by a 5-4 vote.” (12/21/18)

5) No jail time for dancing FBI agent in negligent shooting
Source: CNN

“The FBI agent who [negligently] shot someone while dancing in a Denver bar will not face jail time, said Denver District Attorney Beth McCann. In a press release Friday, McCann said Chase Bishop, 30, pleaded guilty during a disposition hearing to third-degree assault. The plea agreement meant Bishop was sentenced to 24 months of supervised probation, which he can complete out of state, the release says. Bishop will also have to pay a $1,200 fine and pay into the Victim’s Assistance Fund, according to CNN affiliate KMGH. … In June, Bishop was showing off his moves in the center of a dance circle at Mile High Spirits bar when he launched into a back handspring. During the move, a gun fell out of his waistband holster and onto the floor, Denver police said He moved to pick the weapon up and [negligently] fired one shot, police said.” (12/21/18)

6) What we libertarians are aiming for
Source: Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G Hornberger

“As the end of 2018 and the beginning of the new year approach, we libertarians should remind ourselves of what we are aiming for. First of all though is what we are not aiming for: We are not aiming for a warmed-over, reformed version of the welfare-warfare state way of life. That’s because we are aiming for a genuinely free society, and a welfare-warfare state is not freedom, not even in a warmed-over, reformed version. Here’s what we are aiming for …” (12/21/18)

7) “Make America Free Again” isn’t Trump’s agenda
Source: Cato Unbound
by Jacob T Levy

“I have had my say about Stephen Davies’s lead essay. I cannot, however, let Francis Buckley’s apology for Donald Trump, for whom he has previously worked as a speechwriter, pass without comment, as it is marked by grave falsehoods. It is false in its particulars, for example, that, ‘on average immigrants are less educated than they were in the past.’ In fact, according to a Pew Research study earlier this year, immigrants to the United States ‘are better educated than ever’ …. And it is false in its larger central claims. Among these are that the Trump presidency stands for the rejection of the privilege of inherited wealth; a return to respect for the rule of law; and equal opportunity to prosper rather than ‘the old boy network,’ deal-making, and cronyism.” (12/21/18)

8) Strategic disengagement
Source: Common Sense
by Paul Jacob

“The policy was announced in a Tweet: President Trump said it was time to pull out of Syria. We won, he explained. ‘After historic victories against ISIS, it’s time to bring our great young people home!’ … Foreign policy scholar Earl Ravenel had the perfect term for what Trump may be and should be doing: strategic disengagement. We have much to gain from a more restrained — and constitutional — foreign policy.” (12/21/18)

9) Congress ramps up war on sex workers and their customers with secret votes on four new “protection” laws
Source: Reason
by Elizabeth Nolan Brown

“While seemingly preoccupied this week with criminal justice reform and avoiding a government shutdown, Congress also authorized a national strategy for arresting sex buyers and approved the use of secret wiretaps in misdemeanor prostitution cases. The national plan to ‘end demand’ for prostitution was part of the massive ‘Frederick Douglass Trafficking Victims Prevention and Protection Reauthorization Act,’ which cleared the Senate Monday through a secret vote of the sort civil libertarians have long opposed. Congress is now ‘strengthening federal efforts’ to be tough on sex buyers, based on the false idea that customers of consenting adult sex workers drive demand for minors.” (12/21/18)

10) GoFundMe for a government program?
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by Jeffrey A Tucker

“Supporters of the president’s idea of building a wall against illegal migration from the Southern border have opened an account at the website GoFundMe. Motivated by Congress’s failure to act, these enthusiasts have decided to take matters into their own hands and invited the largest-possible contingent of compatriots to join them. Call it vigilante spending. They are asking for donations to support a program they believe in. … There are some practical problems of course. Who gets the money and how does it become a government program, and can it really happen that a private effort of fundraising effort can force itself into what would otherwise be a priority controlled by legislation? This is new territory.” (12/21/18)
