0) A quick note from the publisher …

OK, so we had a short Thanksgiving day special edition, and here’s a short Thanksgiving Friday special edition (5 news stories, 5 commentaries, 5 audio/video links). These specials serve dual purposes:

First, they ensure that I don’t have to make tough calls to keep Monday’s edition to 80 or fewer links.

Secondly, they let me tout our year-end fundraiser.

Thanks to BB, whose $50 contribution this morning brings that fundraiser total to $1,409.50!

My personal “mini-goals” are to break the $1,500 mark today and the $2,000 mark by Monday. Of course, I’m not in control of whether or not those “mini-goals” are met. YOU are. I hope you’ll consider a donation in any amount, one-time or recurring, to support the freedom movement’s daily newspaper. You can make good on that idea at:

1) Brexit deal on the brink of collapse as officials forced to work through the night in desperate bid to get an agreement in time
Source: The Sun [UK]

“Theresa May’s officials have launched round-the-clock talks with Brussels in a last-ditch bid to finish the Brexit deal. British and European aides are locked in non-stop negotiations to sign off on the withdrawal agreement in time for a crunch summit on Sunday. The PM has announced she will hold last-minute talks with top Eurocrats on Saturday after failing to achieve a breakthrough in Brussels last night. If the deal isn’t ready by then, the EU summit this weekend could have to be cancelled — pushing Britain closer to the No Deal cliff-edge.” (11/22/18)

2) NASA is launching a safety review of SpaceX after Elon Musk smoked weed live on the internet
Source: Business Insider

“NASA has ordered a safety review of two of its contracted companies, SpaceX and Boeing, two months after SpaceX CEO Elon Musk was seen smoking weed on a podcast livestreamed on the internet …. Three officials familiar with the review told the [Washington Post] it was prompted by Musk’s smoking weed and drinking whiskey on the ‘Joe Rogan Experience’ podcast in September. Musk’s behavior reportedly concerned senior NASA staff members, who then felt it necessary to scrutinize the corporate culture at its contracted companies.” (11/21/18)

3) Gabbard: Trump is “Saudi Arabia’s bitch”
Source: CBS News

“Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, a National Guard veteran who did two tours in the Middle East, said in a tweet that President Trump is ‘Saudi Arabia’s bitch’ for announcing the U.S. will stand with Saudi Arabia, regardless of any intelligence community assessment on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s involvement in the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi. ‘Hey @realdonaldtrump: being Saudi Arabia’s bitch is not ‘America First,” Gabbard tweeted. Mr. Trump has justified his stance on Saudi Arabia by saying that the country is a key partner in national security and a large buyer of U.S. weapons. Last week, Gabbard also called for an end to any U.S. involvement in the Saudi [invasion of] Yemen which has caused a humanitarian crisis.” (11/21/18)

4) OR: FedEx driver acted in self-defense by punching asshat who later died, will not face charges
Source: Newsweek

“A FedEx delivery driver who punched a man hurling racial slurs at him will not face criminal charges after the man later died, officials announced Monday. Timothy Warren’s punch played a role in the death of Joseph Magnuson but it was ‘a lawful act of self-defense,’ ruled Multnomah County District Attorney Rod Underhill this week. The incident occured in Portland, Oregon, on September 26. Witnesses said Magnuson had ‘very aggressively’ yelled at Warren to slow down while he was driving at around 5-20 MPH. Magnuson had also used racial slurs — including the n-word — at Warren, who is black, they noted. The situation escalated further after Magnuson threw a drink, and possibly food, at Warren and attempted to strike him with his fist. Warren punched back, hitting Magnuson above the eye, causing him to fall and lose consciousness. One witness described the action as defensive. Warren did not continue to hit Magnusson and remained at the scene, officials said.” (11/21/18)

5) Roberts rebukes Trump over “Obama judge” comment
Source: NBC News

“In a highly unusual public statement, Chief Justice John Roberts rebutted President Donald Trump’s statement that a ruling against the administration was made by ‘an Obama judge.’ Asked Wednesday by the Associated Press about the president’s comment, Roberts responded, ‘We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges. What we have is an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them.’ … Trump made his initial comment on Tuesday about the ‘Obama judge’ in response to questions about Monday’s ruling by Federal District Court Judge Jon Tigar in San Francisco that put a temporary hold on the administration’s plan for refusing to consider asylum applications from immigrants who cross the border illegally [sic].” (11/21/18)

6) Another licensing proposal
Source: The Zelman Partisans
by Carl Bussjaeger

“Thomas Gabor, a Canadian pontificating on US policy, thinks we can solve all our firearms crime problems by registering, taxing, folding, stamping, spindling, and mutilating gun honest gun owners. Sort of. … Note the immediate bait and switch: When rights advocates suggest criminals will just break more laws, Gabor suddenly points and exclaims, ‘Look! Over there! Mass shooting!’ And pretends the issue was never more general. By suddenly shifting the discussion to ‘recent mass shootings,’ he deflects attention from the simple facts that 63% of murderers using firearms had prior felony convictions, and that over 93% of firearms used in crimes are obtained through unlawful channels bypassing background checks.” (11/21/18)

7) Market forces are better than feds at fighting fires
Source: Libertarian Party
by staff

“There are several potential approaches to fighting forest wildfires. California operates Cal-Fire at the state level, and cities and counties throughout the state operate their own smaller fire departments. These government-run operations do provide well-trained firefighters who are ready and on call around the clock, but it’s costly to employ these highly paid unionized employees. They spend the majority of their time waiting for a fire to break out, then collect significant overtime pay when disaster actually strikes. Rural Metro Fire in Scottsdale, Ariz., has pioneered an alternative model. It contracts out fire services on a subscription basis in rural areas or on a contract basis to cities. Rural Metro has been able to reduce the costs of fire protection by keeping its full-time staff of firefighters low. Instead, it uses well trained, on-call ‘fire wranglers’ when fires break out.” (11/21/18)

8) Criminal justice reform is good for America
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by Chloe Anagnos

“Justice Action Network’s latest poll shows that three in four people are against mandatory minimum sentencing. And thanks to the work of celebrities like Kim Kardashian, political advocacy groups such as FreedomWorks, and politicians such as Senator Rand Paul, President Donald Trump is listening. In a public display of support for the FIRST STEP Act, a bill that would implement the most sweeping reform to the federal criminal justice system in decades, the president of the United States — to the astonishment of many of his supporters — put extra pressure on Congress to act, stating the whole nation would benefit ‘if former inmates are able to reenter society as productive, law-abiding citizens.’” (11/21/18)

9) Gratitude: The heart of capitalism
Source: Acton Institute
by Rev. Ben Johnson

“Prevailing wisdom has long held that capitalism feeds discontent. New products continually debut, provoking new desires and making consumers dissatisfied with their passe — but perfectly functioning — goods. … Collectivism administered by the welfare state, the argument goes, teaches contentment. Each person gets what he needs, and no one is permitted to have ‘too much.’ … This theory has convinced generations of impressionable people to pay heed to the siren song of collectivism, to their regret. But this analysis has it precisely backwards.” (11/21/18)

10) On Thanksgiving, be grateful for technology
Source: Reason
by Veronique de Rugy

“On this Thanksgiving weekend, I thought it would be appropriate to remind Americans about some of the tremendous technological advancements we should be thankful for: better cellphones, safer cars, Lasik eye surgery, and drones that deliver pizza and life-saving medications. Technology also provides life-changing services like Uber and Airbnb, too. Better still, if you combine technology like drones and Uber, you get one of the most exciting developments yet to come: air taxis.” (11/22/18)
