0) Thankful!

It’s Thanksgiving weekend in the United States — but of course the news never stops, so we’ll continue posting content in between servings of turkey, pumpkin pie, etc., and bringing you one or more weekend special editions (I know it will be at least one because this note accompanies the first — five news stories, five commentaries, five audio/video links for your holiday enjoyment).

We’re thankful for your attention and support as we continue into our second quarter-century as the freedom movement’s daily newspaper and close in on 16 years in our current format!

Speaking of that support, we’re running behind in our year-end fundraising. Our goal is $5,000. Raised so far: $1,359. We could REALLY use your help knocking this out at:

Safe travels, etc. this long weekend!

Yours in liberty,
Tom Knapp

1) Kelly authorizes military abductions, illegal searches, murder when “reasonably necessary,” at Mexico border
Source: New York Post

“The White House gave troops stationed at the southern border the OK to use lethal force if necessary — a move that legal experts warn may violate the Posse Comitatus Act, which bars the military from being used for civilian law enforcement. The ‘cabinet order’ was signed by White House chief of staff John Kelly — not President Trump — and authorizes ‘Department of Defense military personnel’ to ‘perform those military protective activities that the Secretary of Defense determines are reasonably necessary’ to protect border [gang members], the Military Times reported. That includes ‘a show or use of force (including lethal force, where necessary), crowd control, temporary detention and cursory search.’” (11/21/18)

2) Apple removes app that hosts hundreds of millions of blogs from store because some people were doing bad things with it
Source: USA Today

“The social networking service Tumblr announced Monday that its iOS app had been removed from Apple’s App Store after child sexual abuse content had been found on the platform during a routine audit. The platform first announced an undisclosed issue with the iOS app on Friday. Monday’s update said Tumblr uses an ‘industry database’ to prevent the distribution of illicit content; however, the content that was discovered had not yet been included in that database.” (11/20/18)

3) MD: Federal judge rules 15-week abortion ban unconstitutional
Source: The Hill

“A federal judge on Tuesday blocked Mississippi from enacting a ban on abortions past 15-weeks and criticized state lawmakers for trying to pass legislation that would trigger an overturn of Roe v. Wade. U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves, an appointee of President Obama, ruled that the Mississippi Gestation Age Act ‘unequivocally’ violates a woman’s constitutional rights, Buzzfeed News reported. The law, which was enacted in March, would have prohibited abortions 15 weeks after the woman’s last menstrual period. It would have been one of the nation’s most restrictive abortion bans.” (11/20/18)

4) Interpol elects South Korean Kim Jong Yang President over Russian front-runner
Source: CNN

“Russia’s ambitions to head international police agency Interpol were dashed Wednesday after delegates chose acting head South Korean Kim Jong Yang to take the role. Alexander Prokopchuk, a former Russian Interior Ministry official, had been expected to be elected president, but critics opposed his nomination, accusing Moscow of using Interpol’s systems to target and pursue the Kremlin’s political foes.” (11/21/18)

5) UT: Democrats flip another US House seat
Source: CBS News

“Utah’s Mia Love was tabbed as a rising star in the GOP when she became the first black Republican woman in Congress with her 2014 victory. But on Tuesday she became the latest Republican incumbent to fall in the midterm election’s Democratic wave that has seen more than three dozen Republican-held seats flipped across the country. Ben McAdams, a Democratic mayor of Salt Lake County, defeated Love by fewer than 700 votes in a back and forth race that took two weeks to sort out in deep-red Utah.” (11/21/18)

6) Bitcoin isn’t volatile — the world is
Source: Bitcoin.com
by Kai Sedgwick

“In the past two months, the so-called FAANGs — Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Google — have seen more than $1 trillion wiped from their valuations, while the Nasdaq is down 15 percent from its Aug. 30 peak. Oil prices have also slumped, down more than $20 per barrel from their October high. On Nov. 20, all 11 sectors of the S&P 500 index recorded a deficit, including energy and technology, which lost 3.5 percent and 2.4 percent, respectively. Facebook is down 39 percent from its all-time high, Amazon is down 25 percent, Apple and Google are down 20 percent, and Netflix 36 percent. When viewed in a broader context, cryptocurrency volatility inhabits a broader boom and bust cycle that has defined markets ever since the dawn of civilization.” (11/21/18)

7) I’ll keep my loopholes, thank you
Source: Eastern New Mexico News
by Kent McManigal

“In those moments when my skepticism falters, the recent midterm elections threaten to give me a little hope. It doesn’t last long. A Congress divided between Republicans and Democrats brings the promise of sweet gridlock, but they always seem to find a way to work together more than is healthy.” (11/21/18)

8) No subsidies needed
Source: Cafe Hayek
by Don Boudreaux

“Larry Harris is absolutely correct that a strong U.S. dollar, far from impoverishing us, raises our prosperity (‘A Strong Dollar Is Good for America,’ Nov. 19). But I disagree with his suggestion that a strong-dollar policy should be accompanied by government subsidies paid to firms that employ low-skilled workers. The market has a built-in feature that encourages firms to employ low-skilled workers. In fact, it’s the very same feature that encourages firms to employ high-skilled workers — namely, the practice of paying workers wages no higher than the value of what they produce. Workers who don’t demand wages in excess of the value of their outputs are all profitable to employ regardless of their skills levels.” (11/21/18)

9) Alarmist nonsense should not stop sentencing reform
Source: Reason
by Jacob Sullum

“The federal sentencing reforms that Donald Trump endorsed last week could shorten the terms of 2,700 or so drug offenders who are already in prison and perhaps another 2,200 who are sent there each year. That amounts to 1.5 percent of the current federal prison population and 3 percent of the federal defendants sentenced in fiscal year 2017, respectively. … To hear [US Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) and [US Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) tell it, Congress is on the verge of freeing hordes of muggers and murderers. That is not remotely true, and they know it is not remotely true.” (11/21/18)

10) Mises predicted the “meat tax”
Source: Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Joseph T Salerno

“Let us grant the dubious quantification of the deleterious health effects of red and processed meats. And let us accept the even more dubious statistical estimates based on past data of the unpredictable and ever-changing future elasticity of demand for meat, which supposedly measures the sensitivity of consumer purchases to a change in the price of meat. The authors still face a huge problem in making their case for a tax. For the tax on meat is rightly seen by most people as a naked attempt by government to restrict and manipulate their citizens’ diets.” (11/21/18)
